Call for Papers
Information Visualization
Special Issue of IEEE CG&A, January/February 2002

Final revisions due: 1 October 2001
Computer-based information visualization, or "infovis", draws on ideas
from several intellectual traditions, including computer graphics,
human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic
design, cartography, and art. A distinct field centered around helping
people explore or explain data by designing software that exploits the
properties of the human visual system has emerged over the past
several years. New methodologies and techniques are critical for
helping people keep pace with the torrents of data. One of the few
quantities increasing faster than the speed of computer hardware is
the amount of data to be processed.
The theme for the January/February 2002 issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and its
Applications is information visualization. The design challenge
of finding a spatial mapping for an abstract dataset that is
cognitively useful for a specific task is considerable. We solicit
papers that describe innovative results in this area. Potential topics
for articles include:
- visualization of networks, both geographic and topological
- visualization of the Web
- visualization of large text document collections
- visualization techniques for multi-dimensional data
- layout, navigation and browsing of large information spaces
- interaction design for infovis systems
- empirical user studies of infovis systems or techniques
- infovis systems or techniques that scale to large datasets
- application case studies and infovis success stories
Papers should be less than ten magazine pages, where a page is 900
words or five images. Cite only the ten most critical references, and
consider providing background in sidebars for non-expert readers.
Color images may be interspersed through the body of the paper.
Detailed CG&A style and length guidelines are available at http://www.computer.org/cga/author.htm.
